How To Accessorize Your Perfect Outfit

Mestizo Mexican Market & Food Euston London

When I put an outfit together, the clothes often draw the accessories I choose like a magnet. I’m lucky enough to have plenty of choices. Colours and patterns are easy to mix and match when you have a good haul to select from. I still stick to the staples, though. I know what bags look good with most outfits, and one of my favourites definitely fits that bill. I also have a pair of shoes that are almost guaranteed to work with any skirt I’m wearing. What sets my style up for the day is the selection of accessories or finishing touches. Here’s how it’s done:

Handbag – Because I’m out and about most days meeting people, my handbag will be on my arm most of the day. It has to be functional, but it also has to go with what I’m wearing.

Living in the UK, it’s usually essential to take a coat, so the bag needs to work with the dress I’m in and the jacket that goes over the top. I select my handbag to match in colour, mostly. Sometimes, the details like zips and buckles might match some of my other accessories.

Scarf – Another UK essential! Scarves are so versatile and easy to wear. How you tie them or wear them says a lot about the style you are trying to convey. Usually, I like a simple pass-over knot to keep the worst of the weather from my neck. Occasionally, I can use the scarf to add a touch of class to an outfit. Colour and pattern aren’t as important to me here as how the shape flatters my body outline.

Jewellery – Bracelets and rings aren’t as important to me as necklaces and earrings. Fine jewellery can finish an outfit and add a touch of luxury and glamour to my look. Clip-on-earrings are essential to me because I need to feel comfortable while I’m out and about all day. Clip-ons also offer far more variety in terms of style, colour and shape. I like to use coloured gemstones and I try to match these to the colour of my outfit or the handbag.

Make-up – Despite the dangers of making a mess all over my favourite dry-clean-only dress, I do often prefer to put on my make-up after I’ve chosen my outfit. This allows me to colour co-ordinate, or enhance the style and look I’m aiming for. Eye shadow and lipstick are my staples, and it can be a good day when the lippy and handbag work together!

Shoes – As much as I love my black shoes, I know that mixing it up to create the style I want is best. Colours for shoes can be drab, so I look for extra detail and decoration. Comfort is always high on my priority list, but I wouldn’t wear anything that could damage my feet.

I love it when I get my look spot on. I also love adding those finishing touches to complete a great outfit in my preferred style. While it helps to have lots of choices, shopping smart by buying things that work in lots of styles is best. Buy smart to dress smart!
