Hair Detox Recipes: Just take a moment to stop and consider what a day in the life of your hair is like.

It gets washed with shampoos and conditioners that likely have harmful chemicals in them – depending on the kind you use – then it gets burned by the heat of a hair dryer and a straightener, next it gets pounded by the pollution and the sun outdoors.

It goes through a lot each day…

And, after a while, your hair will start to become dull and lifeless. You might notice it has lost all its volume, it gets greasy much sooner, and the dead ends just keep showing up. Once it starts to become damaged, it can seem like a never-ending occurrence. Hair Detox Recipes

But, did you know you can be the hero of your hair’s day? Hair Detox Recipes

What is a hair detox?

We always hear about detox water and other methods of detoxing our body, but that can also be done to our hair. In fact, we should be doing it to our hair, too. Hair Detox Recipes

A hair detox simply helps remove the dirt and grime that builds up in your hair and it also helps rid your hair of the hair care products that get left behind each day.

By removing this layer of junk, you allow your hair to benefit from the healthy products you put in it and can help restore it to its flowy, healthy look and feel.

Just like your insides and your skin, your hair needs a good cleanse every once in a while. Even healthy hair constantly collects product residue, dirt, and grime – so, regardless of how healthy you think your hair might be, everyone could use a hair detox.

How do I detox my hair?

Obviously, detoxing your hair is not as simple as drinking a glass of detox water like you do for an internal detox. But, here are 7 easy ways to detox your hair at home:

Coconut Milk Shampoo

This detox is one of my favourites because it not only leaves your hair feeling great, but it also leaves it smelling great.

Coconut oil is used in several different DIY products that are used for various health reasons, but this particular shampoo uses coconut milk instead.

How to: Mix together ¼ cup coconut milk, 1/3 cup castile soap, 2 capsules vitamin E oil, and 15 to 20 drops fragrant essential oil (optional). Next, wet your hair and work the mixture in just as you would normal shampoo. Concentrate on your scalp, then work your way down to the tips. Lastly, rinse it out.

Benefits: The high levels of antioxidants and protein help add nutrients to your hair. In addition, the castile soap is a highly-effective cleanser that will work to remove the buildup.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is another ingredient that is commonly used in the world of detox thanks to a long list of beneficial properties it has.

How to: Mix together ¼ cup apple cider vinegar and 2 cups of water. First, shampoo and condition your hair as usual, then pour the diluted mixture on your hair and do not rinse it out.

Benefits: The vinegar cleans out with your hair, still leaving behind the natural oils.

Honey Shampoo

I know what you are thinking…

Who in the world would put honey in their hair?

It is incredibly sticky and sounds a bit crazy, but just bear with me on this one…

How to: Mix together 1 tablespoon raw honey, 3 tablespoons water, and an optional addition is an essential oil of your choice. First, wet your hair then work the mixture in – concentrating on your scalp and working your way down to the tips. Rinse your hair with lukewarm water and you’re done. For an added benefit, rinse the honey shampoo off using the apple cider vinegar mixture.

Benefits: Honey keeps your hair moisturized. If you transition from traditional shampoo to honey shampoo you will find that your hair remains in much better condition.

Sea Salt Shampoo

If you are a little on edge about the oddness of the hair cleansing methods we’ve discussed so far, this one might be more up your alley.

How to: Mix together 2 parts coarse sea salt to 1 part shampoo, work into your hair, rinse with cool water.

Benefits: The sea salt exfoliates your skin and when mixed with the shampoo it gets rid of skin cells and hair product buildup.

Baking Soda

This is probably one of the most well-known recipes. It is simple, yet effective.

How to: Mix together ½ cup baking soda and 3 cups hot water. Start by getting your hair completely wet then pour the mixture into your hair. Next, work it into your scalp for a few minutes and then rinse it out.

Benefits: The warm water lifts your cuticles, allowing for the mixture to deep clean your scalp. Then, the baking soda helps remove buildup and battle dandruff.

Cucumber and Lemon Detox

Because of all the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants they contain, fruit and vegetables make a great ingredient for detox – whether it is for your face, hair, or internal organs.

How to: Peel and chop 1 large lemon and 1 medium cucumber. Next, blend them up with an optional essential oil of your choice. Use this mixture just as you would use your regular shampoo.

Benefits: The citric acid from the lemon cleans your scalp, meanwhile, the cucumber works to soothe it. It is the perfect mixture for people with oily scalps.

Cinnamon Detox

Cinnamon is another one of those common household items that provide several health benefits. From helping you lose weight to helping you detox your hair.

How to: Mix together ½ teaspoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and 2 tablespoons olive oil. Next, massage the mixture into your scalp and work it through all sections of your hair. Let the detox sit for 20 minutes and then rinse.

Benefits: The cinnamon detox mask helps pull out the grime and buildup in your hair. But, the high antioxidant contents also help prevent your hair from further damage.

Most of these hair detox methods can be done using ingredients you likely have on hand, and they can all be done in the comfort of your own home in just a few minutes.

It doesn’t take long and your hair is worth the extra work.

If you want to have shiny, voluminous, flowy hair again – this is your answer.

Let us know what you think: Have you tried any of these hair detox methods and if so, which did you like the best? If you haven’t, which one will you try?
